Established as one of Tennessee's original Normal Schools in 1911, MTSU was founded for the purpose of preparing future teachers and is presently the highest producer of teachers in Tennessee. MTSU's rich history in teacher preparation continues through such exceptional programs as Aspire2Teach; Ed.D in Assessment, Learning, & School Improvement; Ph.D in Literacy Studies; Center for the Study & Treatment of Dyslexia; Center for Counseling & Psychological Services; Center for Educational Media; two on-campus Early Childhood lab programs and one home and community based program serving young children. Collaborative partnerships with 44 school districts inform and support program design, clinical experiences, and pre-service development to create a more inclusive and equitable classroom, school and community. The MTSU teacher preparation program is one of transformation, which includes engaging in continuous learning, innovative teaching, development of professional attributes, and meaningful outreach. MTSU is committed to the recruitment and selection of diverse teacher candidates to improve and expand learning opportunities for students of color and diverse backgrounds. In order to provide a global perspective to teaching, MTSU teacher candidates have a unique opportunity to study abroad in Singapore, Belize, or spend a portion of their student teaching semester overseas through the Consortium of Overseas Student Teaching (COST) program. Our students have student taught in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Ireland, Mexico, South Africa, and Greece. MTSU is engaged in a partnership with the State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) to strengthen and enhance our teacher preparation program.
