Memphis Teacher Residency

Contact information

The mission of Memphis Teacher Residency is summarized as "Christian love expressed in equal education." For students to learn at high and equal levels, students must have an effective teacher each year of their K-12 education. Training high-potential teachers and focusing their placement in specific partner neighborhoods meaningfully advances the goal of ensuring that students in these neighborhoods have effective teachers in each year of their education.

MTR focuses teacher placement within specific partner K-12 feeder-pattern schools that serve students within identified partner neighborhoods. Over the last three years, 99% of graduates were hired into a partner neighborhood. This intentional focus will increase access to high-potential, residency-trained teachers for children in MTR partner schools. Currently training its 11th residency class, MTR has 331 residents and graduates teaching and leading in Memphis high-need schools. Most of these teachers are within the 31 partner feeder-pattern schools that serve five MTR partner neighborhoods: Binghampton, Orange Mound, Frayser, Mitchell Heights/Douglass, and Graham Heights.

MTR uses a residency model of teacher training in which residents serve and learn within a mentor teacher's classroom for a whole year before becoming a teacher of record in their own classroom. Residents earn a Master of Urban Education degree from Union University during their residency year.

Increasing the diversity of residency classes remains an important goal. While residency classes have averaged 32% persons of color - higher than the average for TN teacher preparation programs - MTR continues to work to further diversify residency classes so as to best serve Shelby County students.
